Azaleas
Azaleas are small, colourful, flowering shrubs that grow all around the world. They bloom in the Southern Hemisphere during Winter and during Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. They prefer living close to or under trees because of the shade that is produced, sadly their flowers only last for a few weeks. Azaleas are different to a lot of other plants because of their small shape and how they produce one blossom per stem rather than producing blossom clusters.
Eucalyptus Trees
Gum trees (Eucalyptus trees) are flowering plants that dominate the flora in Australia because of how common they are. There are more than 700 species that have been discovered in the world, with 15 of them being found outside of Australia and 9 of them not being found in Australia at all. A mature Gum Tree may take the form of a small shrub or a very large, tall tree with all of them coming in many different shapes and sizes. In the picture at the side it is a photo of Eucalyptus trees. As you can see these ones are very tall and have strong branches that come from them.
State Emblem
The Common Heath is the State Floral Emblem of Victoria. It is a small native shrub that found in South-east Australia. Because of the pink colour on the flower, it is often referred to as the ‘Pink Heath’. The plants stand erect and can grow up to 3 meters high, although not many of the plants reach this height. The branches are strong, stiff and supporting of the flowers and have a prickly surface. The Common Heath, flowers between late Autumn and Early Spring. The flowers are quite fascinating being a narrow tubular shape and growing in bunches.
Endangered Species
Hypocreopsis Amplectens is a fungus found in only three locations in Southern Victoria and only four locations in Australia because it is very rare. It is usually located not far from the coastlines. The fungus grows on top of other fungus forming patches of dead branches. Fires are frequent natural disasters that occur in these types of vegetations, so the fungus avoids these areas, as it prefers to live in unburned habitats. Many sites that I searched were not very informative about the fungus, this is because it is not very well known.
The Palm Tree
The palm tree is a common plant found in Victoria. So far over 2600 species of the Palm Tree have been identified around the world with most of them being restricted to tropical areas, subtropical areas and habitats with warm temperatures. Although, the palm tree almost inhabits every different type of habitat within their large range of from rainforests to hot deserts. They are beautiful flowering plants that are usually associated with the thought of beaches and oceans. They appear very tall, with beautiful, green, luscious leaves are usually extend out like an umbrella.
Vegetation in Victoria
Victoria is mostly made up of wood lands . But also contains other types of environments such as Closed-forests, Open-forests, Shrub land and partly Scrub and Heath. You can see this on the picture at the side which is based on Australia in 1977. Many plants and animals thrive in Victoria because of the fantastic variety of vegetation that there is and the fantastic weather.
